NY Woodland Statistical Summary

  • New York is 63% woodlands, an increase of 2% since 1993 and more than 25% since 1950.
  • Private landowners control 89% of the timberland. Families own 10.8 million acres of woodland (predominately timberland) which is half of the state woodlands and approximately 68% of the timberland.
  • The average family woodland parcel size for all owners is 13.7 acres (10.8 million acres and 788,000 owners).  The average parcel size for families with 10 or more acres is approximately 46 acres.
  • For family owners with 10 or more acres, a quarter felt timber was important (34% of family woodland), two-thirds have cut trees for personal use, and about 40% have sold trees (53% of family woodland).
  • For family owners with 10 or more acres, more than 50% felt that management advice would be helpful, but 84% have not received any management advice and 9% have a written plan.
  • For conifer stems > 1 inch diameter, balsam fir is most common with more than 799,535,000 stems.  Second is red spruce, followed by hemlock and eastern white pine.
  • For hardwood stems >1 inch diameter, American beech is the most common with 1,854,846,000 stems.  Second is red maple, then sugar maple and white ash.
  • For conifer stems > 5 inches diameter, red spruce has the greatest volume, followed by white pine which is slightly greater than eastern hemlock.
  • For hardwood stems > 5 inches diameter, red maple has the greatest volume, followed by sugar maple, white ash, beech, red oak, and black cherry.
  • More than 67,000 New Yorkers are employed in forest products manufacturing with a payroll of over $2.5 billion.  An additional 3,000 foresters and loggers are employed.
  • The forest products industry annually contributes $8.8 billion to the state gross product, and ships more than $6.9 billion. Average annual capital investments are $430 million.
